In November 2020, sixteen of my colleagues and I begin the journey of a lifetime to Everest Base Camp, at 17,500ft above sea level. It’s an adventure that I have always wanted to undertake, and to do so with colleagues whilst raising over £150,000 for worthy causes in Nepal. We will be entering a world only accessible by foot, where the rarefied air causes you to gasp with every step, and the freezing temperatures chill you to the core. It will be a long, hard trek over three weeks that will challenge all of us.
In 2015 a huge earthquake shattered Nepal’s schooling system, with 46,000 classrooms condemned or destroyed. Supporting Nepal’s Children is helping to rebuild these classrooms, so they are seismically-safe. We are supporting that effort with our money raised, and St. James’s Place have kindly offered to double every penny raised for good causes in the UK and abroad, supported through their Charitable Foundation. I am personally hoping to raise at least £5,000 towards these causes.
The trek itself is around 80 miles in total and gets us to Everest Base Camp, at approximately 17,500 ft. That’s over 2,000ft higher than the highest summit in Europe! I have no doubt that it will be a struggle and we will have to put up with some hardship along the way. We will be following in the footsteps of Hillary and Tensing. Then we have to walk back! Being away from home and our loved ones will also test us and our families emotionally.
This is not a subsidised holiday, each of us is paying all of our own costs for this adventure. That means that every single penny raised goes towards worthy causes in Nepal and elsewhere. I would be really grateful if you find it in your heart to sponsor me on this mammoth undertaking.
